Technology has become a bigger part of court reporting, as it has many other industries, and it has allowed the profession to include many other types of opportunities. Most classes for court reporting schools are similar in the basics they will cover. The beginning of the process is to learn how to use a steno machine to take “machine shorthand”. After you can use the machine effectively, you will focus on becoming faster and more accurate. Additional courses are designed to give you a strong grasp of the English language, which includes grammar, writing and vocabulary. You will also study medical and legal terminology since many court reporters work with those specialties. When those basics are covered, the curriculum for most court stenographer schools will advance to teach you about the other machines that you will use in your career as a court reporter.
