A NEW FATHER HOLDS HIS CHILD FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LORETTO HOSPITAL IN NEW ULM, MINNESOTA. THERE ARE TWO HOSPITALS IN... - NARA - 558171.jpg

On Radio 2 Drive earlier today, host Rich Terfry (aka Buck 65) told a story about a son’s unconventional gift for his elderly father. The son was in prison but he and his father were still close and regularly sent letters back and forth.

In one letter, the father wrote that he wished his son was not incarcerated because he could sure use his help with getting the garden ready for planting.

The son wrote back to his father stating, “Whatever you do, don’t dig up the garden! That’s where the bodies are buried.”

Naturally the father called the police. Forensic archaeologists or anthropologists or some form of crime scene personnel arrived and dug up the entire garden, but no bodies were found. The father was left scratching his head…

…Until he got another letter from his son who wrote, “Sorry dad that I can’t be there in person, but that was the best I could do under the circumstances. The garden should be ready for you to plant your tomatoes now.”

This wild tale brings to mind how to treat your dad on Father’s Day. Do you have a father or paternal figure who works in the criminal justice system? If you are still looking for a Father’s Day gift, perhaps some of these ideas will help.

For the private investigator:

Why not get your private investigator dad something fun, like rear view spy sunglasses, a secret decoder ring or a night vision camera. You never know—these gag gifts might even come in handy while he’s on the job.

For the law enforcement officer:

For the officer who may have not yet been decorated with a Medal of Valor or Honor from his department, you can give him his own personal award. You can even personalize it by calling it a Medal of ___ (fill in the blank with the quality you most admire in your father).

For the cyber security specialist:

Does the cyber security expert in your life have to work long hours, odd hours or sometimes even several days straight? You can help him stay awake by getting him his own personal Bodum, his favourite roast of coffee, chocolate-covered espresso beans…You can even make homemade gift certificates granting him coffee deliveries for a month!

For the paralegal, lawyer or other legal professionals :

Organize a movie marathon (with snacks) of inspirational films featuring legal professionals in action. Some examples include, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Paper Chase, The Firm, The Client, My Cousin Vinny, Anatomy of a Murder, A Few Good Men, The Jagged Edge, Legally Blonde, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt,The Firm and The People vs. Larry Flynt. It may turn into a bonding session for you and your father, potentially spurring a conversation about his profession.
